By car from Edinburgh Airport, the Forth Road Bridge or Queensferry Crossing
50 miles, approx. one hour
Gibliston Mill is just over an hour from Ediburgh Airport or 45 minutes from the Forth Road Bridge but during the rush hours, the bridge, Kirkcaldy and Leven can be slower, so allow another 15-25 minutes.
Follow the signs to the Forth Road Bridge. (Watch the 40 mph speed limit on the first dual carriageway through Ratho). Leave the large roundabout at 3 o’clock. Keep in the left lane for the slip road off to the Bridge and M90.
Once you are over the bridge, continue north up the M90 for 5 miles and immediately after the Amazon warehouse, take exit 3 to Kirkcaldy, A92.
At the first roundabout, take the right hand exit and keep following the signs to Leven and the A915. Left and left at the next two roundabouts. After the long straight past the wind turbines, go over one roundabout and turn right to go to Leven at the next roundabout.
Stick on the A915, past Diageo’s bonded warehouses in Leven, through Lundin Links and Upper Largo, where the road becomes the A917. Keep straight (ie. do not go left up the hill to St Andrews) and straight again (ie. don’t turn off right to Elie). The road will turn into the B942.
Go through Colinsburgh, pass the BP garage on your right and after another ¾ mile, take the left turning that reads "St Andrews, 10, B941." After two sharp bends through the rhododendrons, the road straightens out and at the foot of the hill, you take the only road to the right, sign posted "Arncroach 2, Carnbee 4." We're ½ mile from that turning, on your right, signposted clearly to Gibliston Mill. If your SatNav tells you to go left at this point, ignore it. Take the left fork and you’ll be able to park in the courtyard.
By car from Glasgow Airport
86 miles, 1 hour 40 minutes
There are several ways to come, all similar time and mileage, so it depends whether you want to take in some sights on the way: Stirling Castle, The Wallace Monument, Bannockburn, Dunblane, Culross, Pillars of Hercules and Falkland Palace.
Either follow the signs to the M8, then Edinburgh and the Forth Road Bridge, then directions as above.
To see Culross, follow the M8, M80, go over Kincardine Bridge and then continue on the A985. Join the M90 at Inverkeithing, head north to Perth and exit at J3, then directions as above.
For Stirling, take the M8, M80, M9 and then A91 via Dollar and Kinross to the M90. Either go through Milnathort and the B996 (prettier) or nip up the M90 for one stop and onto the A91, signed to St Andrews. Then take the A912 and A914, signed to Cupar and cut through via Hill of Tarvit, a wonderful National Trust, Arts & Crafts house by Robert Lorimer. In Ceres, pass the Spar shop, go left and right (Anstruther Road) up to the B940 and straight on, through Peat Inn, then Largoward.
From the Stag Head Inn in Largoward, keep on the B941 to Elie by turning right and then immediately left. Go 2.3 miles down the hill (if it’s clear weather, you’ll see first the May Island, then the Bass Rock). Turn left where it is sign posted “Arncroach 2, Carnbee 4." We're ½ mile from that turning, on your right, signposted clearly to Gibliston Mill.
By car from St Andrews
10 miles, 18 minutes
Leave town by Morrisons Supermarket, taking the signs to Leven and Largo. Stay on the Largo road until you get through Largoward, then turn left by the Stag Head. This is the B941 to Elie. After 2.3 miles down the hill (you’ll see first the May Island, then the Bass Rock) you’ll come to the only road off to the left, sign posted “Arncroach 2, Carnbee 4." We're ½ mile from that turning on your right. Gibliston Mill is clearly marked.
By car from the Tay Bridge or Perth
18 miles, 30-40 minutes from the Tay Bridge
Coming south across the Tay Bridge, follow the signs to Leuchars and St Andrews. Go through Guardbridge and turn left at the mini roundabout (to St Andrews) and after ½ mile, turn right by ‘Fast and Fresh’, on the B941 up through Strathkinness. Keep heading south through Peat Inn and Largoward.
From the Stag Head Inn in Largoward, keep on the B941 to Elie (you do a dog leg, right and left). Go 2.3 miles down the hill (if it’s clear weather, you’ll see first the May Island, then the Bass Rock). Turn left where it is sign posted "Arncroach 2, Carnbee 4." Gibliston Mill is exactly ½ mile from that turning on your right.
By Train or Bus
Before looking at this option, bear in mind that Gibliston is off the beaten track and unless you are only spending one night with us, you’d probably be better off hiring a car from the airport.
Our nearest stations are Leuchars, Cupar and Markinch. Leuchars is an hour from Edinburgh. Markinch is about 45 minutes and slightly cheaper. The stations are all 25 minutes and £25-£35 to Gibliston by taxi.
Leuchars is near St Andrews with regular buses into town. You can then get another bus out to Largoward (one or two per hour, but not in the evenings. Jane can then collect you from bus station in Largoward.
By Tram and Train from Edinburgh Airport
Take the tram to Edinburgh Gateway and change on to the railway to Markinch. We're a 25 minutes taxi from there.
Alternatively, take the tram straight into Edinburgh if you want to see the sights (there is a left luggage place at Waverley but it's fairly expensive). Take the train to Markinch or Leuchars and get a taxi to Gibliston Mill from there.
The best local taxi firm is Val’s Cabs 01333 730 734 but book well in advance as Martin only has one taxi. He charges £70 from the airport. H&S have 4 taxis and are on 01333 311 111.
